When he was young, like so many others, James had no firm idea of what his future work life would be. “I was open to different opportunities and tried to keep an open mind. It became clear early on, however, that my interests lay in justice and rule-following. For a period there I thought I might go into the army or the police,” says James. “As things turned out, the law suited me perfectly. In particular, acting for those who have been injured through no fault of their own. I like sticking up for the little person, and the law allows me to do this.”
He’s just passed 21 years working as a lawyer, and these days, James acts for those in need every day as a partner at local personal injury specialist firm Maliganis Edwards Johnson (MEJ).
Born and raised in Sydney, James first came to Canberra to study law at the ANU. He quickly fell in love with the nation’s capital, and also with a local, Renee, who later became his wife. Together they moved back to Sydney for a period and enjoyed the lifestyle, but the lure of open spaces, hiking, skiing, and the four distinct seasons was hard to resist.
These days James loves living in Canberra with Renee and their three children, and when they can fit it in, still tries to get away to the beach or the mountains as often as possible.
Interestingly, given his initial vocational nudge, James says if he wasn’t a lawyer, he’d be a psychologist, although he gets a bit of a taste of that in his day job.
“I enjoy talking to people, listening to them and helping whenever I can. But my job really is part lawyer, part psychologist, part priest. It can be a strange mix,” laughs James.
And it’s still that strong sense of justice that drives him and makes him just as enthusiastic about his career two decades on.
“I’m passionate about working with clients in the personal injury sphere to maximise their entitlements, working out ways to best compensate them for the past, and protect them for the future. And making sure that to the best of my ability, I achieve a settlement giving my client the financial backing and autonomy to recover as best they can,” says James.
