Five minutes with MEJ partner James Treloar
James Treloar is a senior Partner at Maliganis Edwards Johnson and heads a specialist team of personal injury lawyers.

“I’ve always enjoyed representing clients,” says James.

James has been dedicated to securing fair compensation for his clients throughout his impressive career spanning almost 3 decades, and is now recognised by Doyle’s Guide as one of the ACT’s leading plaintiff lawyers in personal injury law.
James made the move from Sydney to Canberra initially to study Law (Honours) and Science at the Australian National University, later adding a Master of Laws from Sydney University to his credentials. During his time in Canberra, he fell in love with the city and it was an easy decision to make it his home.
“I really enjoy the feel of Canberra,” James recalls. “The open spaces, hiking, skiing, and the four distinct seasons were hard to resist.”
When asked about what drives him in his work, he emphasises the personal connection that makes each case unique.
“I enjoy talking to people, listening to them and helping clients who are often in a vulnerable situation and unsure of their options” James says.
“Making sure that to the best of my ability I achieve a settlement giving my client the financial backing and autonomy to recover as best they can is very satisfying.”
When James isn’t in the office, you’ll find him spending quality time with his wife Renee, their three children and their family dog, an Irish Setter named Murphy. He still tries to get away to the beach or the mountains as often as possible, embracing Canberra’s enviable proximity to both.
Although he still makes regular trips to Sydney, James has considered himself a Canberran for many years, with his family home located on the northside. Like all true Canberrans he also struggles with the summer heat, and declares autumn his favourite time of the year in the nation’s capital.
