Each month the MEJ team shines a spotlight on the organisations making a real difference in our community. This past month, the team laced up their shoes for one Canberra charity.

Karinya House

This month’s spotlight goes to Karinya House, with a group of MEJ team members joined hundreds of Canberrans for the Karinya House Walk for Hope.

Personal Assistant Stella Smith says the day was one she won’t forget.

“I was proud to join my colleagues for the Karinya House Walk for Hope, a cause that holds a special place in my heart. Being part of the walk was a really meaningful experience, and I loved coming together with our team to show our support for the incredible women and families Karinya House supports.”

Established in 1997, Karinya House is a local, community-based, not-for-profit organisation providing safety, shelter and a positive support network for women in Canberra and the surrounding region who are pregnant or parenting. They operate around the clock, every single day of the year, because the women who need them don’t always get to choose the timing.

It is the only service of its kind in the region, offering both residential and outreach-based case management support. For a woman navigating pregnancy or early parenthood without safety, shelter or a support network around her, Karinya House is often the only place to turn.

For Associate Kirsten Nasser, walking in support of Karinya House felt timely and necessary.

“I think it’s important to continue raising both money and awareness for those experiencing domestic violence. Now more than ever, we are seeing the devastating impact of domestic violence on individuals and families, and there is a real need for greater support services, awareness and action.”

Associate Thuto Igba felt the same pull.

“Taking part in this fundraiser was important to me because I believe everyone deserves to feel safe, supported and heard, especially vulnerable mothers. I wanted to do my part to show support for those affected by domestic violence and help raise awareness for an issue that impacts so many lives.”

And for Associate Mirna Faraj, it was simply about showing up.

“I was very happy to take part in Karinya House’s Walk for Hope and to support such an important cause. It was a fantastic opportunity to contribute to the work Karinya House does to support women and families in our community, and I was grateful to be involved.”
