MEJ is proud to be based in Canberra, and each month the team selects two charities that contribute to making the nation’s capital safe, and welcoming. The charities featured in this month’s spotlight are the Prostate Cancer Foundation and Canberra Community Law.

This month, the Prostate Cancer Foundation was chosen for their work in increasing awareness of prostate cancer, and providing support for prostate cancer patients.

MEJ has a personal connection with the community organisation, after a team member’s brother was diagnosed with prostate cancer in March last year.

”While undergoing treatment, my brother is giving back to the Foundation by putting the message out there through talks to various groups and participating in their Long Run each September.”

The second charity chosen this month is Canberra Community Law.  MEJ Law Clerk Fin Squire chose to nominate this not-for-profit community legal centre for their continued work to provide legal services to people on low incomes or facing other disadvantages in Canberra and the surrounding regions.

For example, this charity provides legal assistance to those facing homelessness or domestic violence; and to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities about public housing issues and race discrimination.

“I chose Canberra Community Law because I believe everyone deserves legal representation and a voice when facing uncertainty,” Fin said.
