MEJ Charity Spotlight: Stroke Foundation Australia and Ronald McDonald House Canberra
This month we are proud to spotlight two organisations providing crucial support during life’s most challenging moments, the Stroke Foundation Australia and Ronald McDonald House Canberra, both chosen by the MEJ team for donations at our latest morning tea.
Stroke Foundation Australia
Nominated by Special Counsel Svetlana Todoroski, Stroke Foundation Australia plays a vital role in prevention, research, education, and supporting individuals and families affected by stroke.
“I chose to support Stroke Foundation Australia because of the vital role it plays in prevention, research, education, and supporting individuals and families affected by stroke,” says Svetlana. “Stroke can impact anyone, often without warning, and its consequences are life-changing.”
Stroke is a leading cause of death and disability in Australia, with someone experiencing a stroke every 19 minutes. The Foundation’s work spans critical areas including funding world-leading research, providing education and prevention programmes, supporting survivors and their families, and advocating for improved stroke care and services across Australia.
The Foundation’s StrokeLine (1800 787 653) provides free, confidential support and information for stroke survivors, their families, carers, and health professionals, operating Monday to Friday.
Ronald McDonald House Canberra
Ronald McDonald House Charities provides a place to stay for families with seriously ill children receiving treatment at Canberra Hospital, offering comfort and stability when families need it most.
Nominated by Associate Thuto Igba, Ronald McDonald House Canberra understands that when a child is seriously ill, the whole family is affected.
“After witnessing the challenges families face during a NICU stay, I am truly in awe of the incredible support provided by Ronald McDonald House Charities, offering comfort, stability, and a place to stay for families when they need it most,” says Thuto.
Located close to Canberra Hospital, the House provides accommodation so families can stay near their sick child without the added stress and expense of commercial accommodation. For many regional and interstate families, this support is invaluable, allowing parents to be present during their child’s treatment and recovery.
Beyond just a place to sleep, Ronald McDonald House offers a supportive community where families going through similar experiences can connect, share meals in communal kitchens, and find understanding during incredibly difficult times. The charity relies on donations and volunteers to continue providing this essential service to families across the ACT and surrounding regions.
