This month, two members of the MEJ team have chosen charities close to their hearts, one supporting vulnerable women in our community, and one helping to save lives in those critical first moments of a medical emergency. We’re proud to spotlight both.

Toora Women

This month’s first spotlight goes to Toora Women Inc, nominated by Taylah Brown, Law Clerk.

“I selected Toora Women Inc because of the vital trauma-informed support they provide to vulnerable women within the Canberra community,” says Taylah. “Their commitment to empowerment, dignity, and long-term wellbeing strongly aligns with values that are important to me.”

Toora Women is a Canberra-based organisation providing a range of specialist services for women who have experienced trauma, homelessness, mental health challenges, or family violence. Their approach is grounded in respect and self-determination – recognising that every woman’s path to stability and wellbeing is her own. From supported accommodation to counselling and community programs, Toora Women walks alongside some of the most vulnerable members of our community at the times they need it most.

Street Beat

Our second spotlight this month goes to Street Beat, nominated by Samantha Menager.

“I chose this charity after recently completing first aid and CPR training, which really highlighted how important it is to have access to life-saving equipment in an emergency,” says Samantha. “Learning about the impact an AED can have in those critical first moments made this charity especially meaningful to me, as their work helps make communities safer and gives people a better chance when every second counts.”

Street Beat works to place Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) in accessible locations across the community, so that when someone experiences a sudden cardiac arrest, help is within reach. Every minute without defibrillation reduces survival chances significantly – and Street Beat’s work means that in more and more locations, bystanders don’t have to wait for emergency services to act. It is practical, life-saving work, and we are proud to support it.

Proud to support our Canberra community

We regularly spotlight charities, giving our team a chance to celebrate and recognise the people and organisations making a big difference in our community.
