MEJ welcomes Medical Negligence Solicitor Anna Bennett

The MEJ team is excited to welcome solicitor Anna Bennett, who joins the firm’s medical negligence practice bringing a wealth of experience from her time working within the Canberra legal system, including a previous role as a Deputy Registrar at the High Court of Australia.

A born and bred Canberra local, Anna completed her studies at the Australian National University before beginning her legal career. Her path included time in criminal law, working closely with the courts, before she found her calling in a more client-focused area of practice.

“I like working with people who’ve had bad things happen to them, that advocacy side of it, helping them through that process,” Anna explains. “Being able to work with someone from the start to the end of their matter is really important to me.”

Anna enjoys the technical and varied nature of medical negligence work. “Every file is like learning about a new area of medicine,” she says. “It’s such an interesting, cross-disciplinary area of law – and one of the most technical areas you can practise in.”

Looking ahead, Anna believes technology will continue to reshape the legal landscape, particularly in her own area of practice. “As technology advances, standards of care change too,” she says. “I think it’s going to affect every area of law, it’s exciting to see where it takes us as a profession.”

Reflecting on her career so far, Anna points to her time at the High Court as a particular highlight. “I was involved in a matter with a self-represented litigant who ended up running her own appeal in the High Court, and won,” she says. “That’s basically unheard of. It was incredible to be part of.”

Outside of work, Anna is a keen soccer player, having spent years playing as a striker, most recently for Canberra Olympic. When she’s not on the pitch (or recovering from an injury), she can be found spending time with friends, enjoying a casual pub night, or planning her next overseas adventure having travelled to over 20 countries, with Portugal and Costa Rica among her favourites. At home, she shares her life with two rescued cats, Peanut and Pumpkin.
