Get to know Heather Ross: Medical expertise meets compassionate advocacy
You can’t turn back the clock. But you can make the future better.
That’s the philosophy driving Heather Ross, Special Counsel at Maliganis Edwards Johnson, who’s spent over 20 years practising medical negligence and institutional abuse law. Her work is about ensuring clients get the compensation and accountability they deserve.
“I love that I can ‘right wrongs’ for those who cannot do it for themselves,” she says. “Although we cannot turn back the clock, compensation can definitely better the future for these people.”
When asked what sets MEJ apart, Heather points to the team.
“MEJ has a fabulous team,” she says. “I honestly enjoy working with my colleagues and passing on what I’ve learnt from my many years of practising law, helping them grow and navigate difficult and complex situations.”
Ask Heather about her biggest career highlight and she finds it hard to choose just one.
“There are times when the work I have done has changed the law for the better, and that is a great feeling. However, I love each and every ‘win’ and knowing that I have been able to get the best outcome possible for each of my clients.”
When it comes to emerging areas of law, Heather has her eye on artificial intelligence.
“AI is an interesting area and problems are already rearing their head, good and bad. This is definitely a ‘watch this space’ in terms of the law catching up with the challenges AI will bring.”
After relocating from tropical Darwin over 16 years ago, Heather has embraced Canberra life as a proud Northsider, though she admits she still loves summer warmth and spring blooms best.
When she’s not working on complex cases, you’ll find Heather in her garden, walking her dachshund Bentley with her husband, or enjoying time with friends and family.
What clients appreciate most about working with Heather is her caring and compassionate approach combined with extensive medical knowledge. She understands that behind every case is a person going through a difficult time, and she’s committed to guiding them through with both expertise and empathy.
