MEJ Charity Spotlight – Lifeline Canberra and OzHarvest
Each month the MEJ team selects two charities that contribute to making Canberra and the wider community a better place. The charities featured in this month’s spotlight are Lifeline Canberra, and OzHArvest.
Lifeline Canberra has supported people in moments of crisis for over 50 years. They are a point of contact for anyone experiencing thoughts of suicide, as their highly skilled volunteers provide 24/7 support via their 13 11 14 crisis line. Law clerk Hugh McSweeney chose Lifeline Canberra, because of the help they provide for people in a vulnerable position.
“They provide a critical service for those going through challenging times.” Hugh says.
“Their commitment to suicide prevention is admirable and benefits the community.”
The second charity chosen was Oz Harvest. The local team, established in 2008, rescues over 7 thousand kilos of surplus food, delivering nearly 22 thousand meals every week to people in need throughout the region. Special Counsel Heather Ross nominated Oz Harvest for their work to rescue good quality surplus food to assist those who struggle to put food on the table. OzHarvest Canberra started rescuing food in 2008.
“Their work is especially important given the current climate of the rising costs of living.” Heather says.
“OzHarvest assists those who are doing it tough, while also fighting the war on food waste – another big issue.”
