MEJ seeks justice for victims of historical child abuse in Tasmania
Our team is investigating claims of historical abuse alleged at Tasmanian institutions, including:
- Kennerley Children’s Home
- Wybra Hall
- Ashley Home for Boys
- Weeroona Girls’ Training Centre
Former employees or community members who may have attended or been involved with these institutions are encouraged to come forward to share their experiences.
Special Counsel Thomas Wallace-Pannell said victim-survivors or their loved ones can also connect with one of MEJ’s experienced and compassionate lawyers.
“As the alleged abuse happened many years ago, it’s important that we gather as many memories and stories as possible to help fill any gaps,” Thomas said.
“Anyone who experienced abuse or is willing to speak about what might have happened to children in these institutions will help us seek justice.”
He said recent changes to law also make it easier for victims to seek justice and compensation, even if they had already received compensation and signed a Deed of Release.
“Earlier this year, a Tasmanian Court ordered $2.4 million in damages, setting aside a 1994 settlement of $34,000 to the survivor and a Deed of Release that released the Anglican Church from any further liability,” Thomas said.
